Volkswagen Auto Glass & Windshield Replacement

Volkswagen LogoVolkswagen is a German company and the top selling vehicle line of the Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen or VW started selling cars in the United States in 1949. Sales were slow and in 1955 with the release of their now iconic Volkswagen Beetle sales reached 1 million.

VW’s were very popular in the 60’s and 70’s. They were cheap and easy to work on. During the 1980’s Volkswagen was not doing so well. With Honda, Toyota, and Nissan now offering cheap reliable cars and a lower price it was hard to compete. Today, Volkswagen is doing well.  In 2012, they had record sales of 6.29 million vehicles. With a full line of cars and SUV’s they are great vehicle’s with a solid reputation.

Volkswagen Windshield Replacement

Windshield replacements on a VW require a skilled technician. There are many parts that are unique to Volkswagen. Many models have a PAAS (pre-applied adhesive strip) on the bottom of the glass. This will allow the windshield cowl to snap into place. It’s very important to use OEM or a quality aftermarket part. Cheap generic parts will not come with this strip and it will have to be glued in place.

Volkswagen cars have an underside moulding leaving the top edge of the glass exposed. When removed the install must use caution not to scratch the paint. there is no mouldings to cover it up.

The Volkswagen EOS Convertible is different because the quarter glass and back glass must be calibrated at the dealership after replacement.

Volkswagen replacement car windows and windshields range in price from about $200 – $1000 dollars depending on the vehicles options.  The car door glass replacement takes longer than average to install due to the unique German engineering.

Late model Volkswagen cars have many options and features build into the glass, all of which effect the price.

Volkswagen Windshield Replacement Options:

Volkswagen Heated Windshield – Electric heating of the windshield glass allows it to begin clearing frost and fog as soon as you start the vehicle. There’s no need to wait for the engine to warm up the standard defroster in the climate control system. Available on Volkswagen Touareg.

Heat-Insulating Glass- Infrared-reflective glass contributes towards a pleasant interior climate. It reduces heat build-up inside the vehicle in hot ambient conditions. At the same time, fuel consumption is lowered if an air conditioning system is running, as less energy will be required to cool down the interior to the desired temperature.

Infrared Reflective Glass- Glass can be easily penetrated by infrared light (heat radiation). Normal glass can only reflect UV rays, whereas heat radiation can pass through virtually unhindered. Only by providing the glass with a special coating based on a silver alloy can a large amount of the long-wave infrared light be reflected.
This means in particular that the amount of heat radiated to the passenger when the sun is shining into the vehicle is noticeably reduced.

Acoustic Interlayer- Additional sound barrier between the laminated glass reducing road noise. Making for a more comfortable ride.

Rain/Light Sensor- The Volkswagen rain sensor automatically regulates the windshield wiper speed according to the intensity of the rain.
The sensor is housed in the mount of the interior mirror attached to the windshield. It consists of a number of infrared LEDs and a central photodiode. The light emitted by the LEDs is reflected by the windshield onto the photo sensor. The more drops of water there are on the windscreen, the less light the sensor receives. This information is relayed to an electronic control unit, which adapts the wiper interval accordingly. There is also a selector switch for individually adjusting the sensitivity of the sensor. The rain sensor is designed such that minor windshield damage, dirt or ageing do not impair its functionality.

Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist- Using a camera mounted to the windshield the system measures the vehicle’s position within lane boundaries. The system monitors the movement and will provide an audible and visual warning when the vehicle moves onto either line if the turn signal is not used. During an unintentional lane drift, the system provides a visual warning and uses electric power steering to help gently course-correct the vehicle back into the lane.
