Windshield & Glass Coverage
If you are not sure if your insurance will cover the cost of a windshield repair / replacement the first step is understanding what type of coverage you have.
Liability – This type of coverage does not cover auto glass damage. It only covers other peoples property/ vehicle in the event of an accident.
Collision / Comprehensive – The Comprehensive portion of your auto insurance policy will cover glass damage. These make up a “Full Coverage” Policy.
Insurance Deductible
Your insurance deductible is the amount that you pay out of pocket at the time of the service. It is important to know what your deductible is because if you carry a high deductible, it is better to just pay for the glass service and not file a claim.
Example 1:
Insurance Deductible = $500
New Windshield = $349
Total out of pocket expense $349
You are responsible for the cost up to $500. Insurance would not cover any portion and no claim is needed.
Example 2:
Insurance Deductible = $50
New Windshield = $349
Total out of pocket expense = $50
You pay your $50 Deductible at the time of service and your insurance will cover the rest.
Always call and check your policy because many insurance companies can have a separate “Glass Only” deductible. This means that even tho you have a high deductible, if it is a glass only claim your deductible may be less.
Calling and checking coverage will not effect your rates or policy.
