An Audi TT Coupe windshield replacement has it challenges. We will show you the steps and what it takes for a proper replacement. Abbey Rowe Auto Glass has the expert installers required for this technical installation. This 2008 Audi TT Coupe windshield with rain sensor was replaced in Austin, TX.
The Audi TT is the smallest car in Audi’s lineup. First released in 1998, it is available as a coupe or convertible. The little sports car got its name from the Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle race.
2008 Audi TT Coupe Windshield Replacement w/ Rain Sensor
Before the installation begins make sure you have the correct replacement windshield and the vehicle actually has a rain sensor. For this model the rain sensor is located in the base of the rear view mirror mount.
The rain sensor uses infrared light beamed at a 45-degree angle into the windshield which reflects back. If the glass is wet, less light returns to the sensor, and the windshield wipers wipers turn on.
The windshield has an underside moulding which means the “rubber gasket” that goes around the glass is attached to the inside of the glass. This leaves the edge of the windshield exposed. The Audi TT has an extremely close tolerance, the painted portion of the vehicle and the edge of the windshield are just a few millimeters apart.
It is extremely important that the technician is highly skilled and qualified before trying to remove this windshield. Any scratches will visible.
After the cowl had been removed the windshield can be cut out.
With the windshield removed, trim all but about 2 millimeters of existing urethane from the pinch-weld. Clean and remove all debris, apply the windshield primer to all exposed paint and scratches and allow to dry.
Clean and prep the new replacement windshield and ensure all contaminates are removed. The underside moulding will come already attached from the manufacturer. Apply a V bead of urethane to the pinch-weld, making sure the height and size of the bead is consistent with the manufactures specs. Set the windshield and ensure proper spacing and repeat previous steps to put everything back together.
Place a strip of painters tape across the top of the windshield (or two vertical strips, one on each side) to ensure the windshield sets properly. The tape can be removed after 8 hours. In the photos above we used a clear windshield tape designed for automotive use. Do NOT use clear packing tape, duct tape or any other kind of tape.It will cause damage to the vehicles paint.
