2001 Chevrolet Corvette Windshield Replacement

The Chevrolet Corvette or Vette is an iconic sports car from General Motors.  Also known as “America’s sports car”, the Corvette’s first production run was in 1953 and has been in production since.

There are a few options for replacement windshields. On this particular model, 2001 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 there is a option for a Heads-up display.

In 2001, there are three body styles:

• 2 Door Convertible
• 2 Door Coupe
• 2 Door Hardtop

All three require a different replacement windshield. It can be difficult to tell the difference between the coupe and the hardtop. The hardtop (Z06 only comes in this version) has no removable roof. The coupe has a removable roof section. (I call it a removable roof section because “removable hardtop” make it more confusing)

As you can see there is a solid roof line with no removable top.

Like all proper windshield replacements, you must first remove the cowl and the windshield wipers. The windshield wiper fluid hose runs through the cowl and into the wiper arm. Disconnect before removing wiper arm.

With the cowl removed, you have clear access to the bottom of the windshield.

Pull down the rubber door seal around the door frame and down the A-pillar to expose the windshield A-pillar trim. The trim is held in place by a series of phillips screws. There is a weak putty-type filler between the trim and the frame used to help seal out water. As you can see from the photos, there is water damage to the headliner from a leak. This is a factory windshield that has never been replaced.

After all the trim is removed the windshield can be cut out. Once the windshield is out, trim all but about 2 millimeters of existing urethane from the pinch-weld.

Apply the windshield primer to all exposed paint and scratches and allow to dry.

Clean and prep the new replacement windshield and ensure all contaminates are removed.  Install the new top strip molding to the windshield while on the rack prior to installation.

Apply a V bead of urethane to the pinch-weld. Make sure the height and size of the bead is consistent with the manufactures specs. Set the windshield and ensure proper spacing and repeat previous steps to put everything back together.

Place a strip of painters tape across the top of the windshield (or two vertical strips, one on each side) to ensure the windshield sets properly. The tape can be removed after 8 hours.
